Juxtapoz interview Anthony Pontius

March 27th, 2010 2 comments

Anthony Pontius‘ debut Los Angeles solo show at our new gallery location in Culver City is fast approaching. I was recently talking with Anthony about this new body of work and wanted to share with you all a little bit more of the backstory fueling this new series. Below is a lil’ excerpt from his mail to me:

“the elusive caped cobra is not one painting but the essence of the entire show… the caped cobra is like a deity that represents the power hidden in the beauty of nature… yes ,she can be deadly but never will she abuse her power… we traded that force in exchange for a separate history of humankind… so it is now the merry band of riders who are dedicated to uphold her message thus preserving the lost harmony…”

Much will be left up to the interpretation of the viewer, but we’ll provide some add’l background info as the show grows closer. Pontius’ work is so multi-layered and textured, that in person they take on a new life all their own. We can’t wait for all to see his work in person this coming April.

Juxtapoz are big fans of Pontius’ work and recently posted a brief interview with him.

Thinkspace flashback part 1…

March 22nd, 2010 2 comments

This coming November marks our 5 Year Anniversary with Thinkspace and it has proven to be one hell of a ride. As we prepare to take things to the next level both in terms of presentation and profile with our upcoming move to our new 2,400 sq. ft. space in the heart of the Culver City gallery district, we felt it would be cool to look back and revisit some of the shows that helped establish us as a gallery.

We’ll kick off the ‘Flashback’ series with a look at our inaugural show, ‘Picks Of The Harvest: Batch One’ which took place at our first location just off Melrose near Fairfax (in the shadow of Brooklyn Projects and SURU) in November of 2005. Our debut show drew well over 1,000 art lovers and featured live painting on the side and back of our gallery from none other than Buff Monster and Mear One – both drew massive crowds that blocked the alleyway all evening long watching these monsters at work.

As for the show itself, it was the beginning of our ongoing relationships with such now established artists as Audrey Kawasaki, Ekundayo and Anthony Clarkson and also included works from the likes of Dalek, Greg ‘Craola’ Simkins, Lola, Sean Christopher, Thomas Han, Anthony Ausgang, Nathan Spoor, Lesley Reppeteaux, Mark Price, Dan Quintana, Ronald Kurniawan, and several others that have gone on to become regular fixtures in the new contemporary art movement.

Check out pics from the opening night here:

Thank you all for the years of ongoing support! We look forward to all that lay ahead at our new location in Culver City and are more energized then ever before to showcase the most exciting artists from the new contemporary art movement. We can’t wait for all to see the new space when we open on Fri, April 9th. Don’t miss it!

Anthony Pontius
‘the caped cobra and his merry band of riders’

The debut LA solo exhibition from NY based artist Anthony Pontius.

“The caped cobra and his merry band of riders are a group of humans that evolved during the end of the technological world of old in order to survive, they must coexist with nature by any means much like early human nomads. The band traverse the land searching for their long lost connections to the world as they grow the union creates their new identity the caped cobra is the elder of the group. He has reached his goal, he is the most experienced and unified. The merry band of riders represent the youth and the future of the culture. They are represented at various stages of their journeys. The entire group of paintings and drawings document all of the stages that are required for the riders to exist…there are over 30 paintings and drawings that depict the rise of the troupe.” - Anthony Pontius commenting on his new body of work

Exhibition runs: April 9th -April 30th, 2010
Opening Reception: Friday, April 9th, 2010 7-10PM with artist in attendance
