’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Lindsey Carr

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ’5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
The piece is named Dukkha and is inspired by 19th Century Chinese bird and flower paintings which were made for export to England. I love their strange mix of oriental and western sensibilities. The flowers are Magnolias with a central Lotus flower and among its leaves are European Bee Eaters doing some of the basic activities necessary for survival. The term Dukkha is sanskrit and usually translates as ‘suffering’ but some say it is better translated as ‘Unease’ – it’s a commonly used term in Buddhist philosophy.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I moved from London to Scotland and started painting again after many, many years!

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Aside from obvious things like paints and paper:
Kitchen roll. Clean water. A mirror. Good reference materials. An audio book.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Alive and well and painting all the time.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
My first solo show! Which is in the UK in February at Imagine Gallery and then I’ll be in your project room in September! Which i’m thoroughly excited about.

Craig "Skibs" Barker - 'I Can Not Change The Future But I'll Find You If You're Gone' - Oil and mixed media

This November Thinkspace will celebrate our 5 Year Anniversary. To help celebrate we’ve put together a group show we can’t wait for everyone to see this coming November.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Craig “Skibs” Barker

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ’5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
My piece is an expansion of my previous work exploring interpersonal relationships, and non-verbal communication. With inspiration taken from pop culture, literature, music and printed material I combine figurative, abstract, and mixed media styles to explore these relationships and unspoken conversations.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
In 2005 I was finishing my painting degree from CSUF and was just beginning to show my mixed media paintings. Also, with some help from Jason Maloney, began showing my work at the Cannibal Flower shows in LA.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
1. Paint 2. Brushes 3. Respirator 4. Music 5. Comfortable chair

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Happy and healthy with painting as my only job, and making a living at it!!!

What have you got coming up in 2011?
My main focus for 2011 is a 3 person show I will be in at Thinkspace Gallery in March with Derek Gores, Liz Brizzi and myself.
