Tran Nguyen 'As We Procure A Hazy Memory' - Acrylic and graphite on Rives BFK paper

This November Thinkspace will celebrate our 5 Year Anniversary. To help celebrate we’ve put together a group show we can’t wait for everyone to see this coming November.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Tran Nguyen

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ’5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
- “As We Procure a Hazy Memory” focuses on the occasions in which we try to remind ourselves of a certain memory buried too deep to distinguish vividly. Instead, the memory is hazy, dim, and mysterious with little definition. This act is universal to us and no matter how hard we may try, procuring memories this deep can never be fully retrieved. Thus, continues to wander in our minds and on the “tip of our tongues.”

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
- Crazy, I graduated from high school in ’05, living the careless life of a teen.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
- My Escoda brush, computer, a pillow, art/reference books, and some company every now and then.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
- Out of debt, haha.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
- For the main entree, I have a huge solo coming up (at Thinkspace July ’11), and for the side dishes, some spectacular group shows.

Jacub Gagnon 'Elementary, Deer Watson' - Acrylic on canvas

This November Thinkspace will celebrate our 5 Year Anniversary. To help celebrate we’ve put together a group show we can’t wait for everyone to see this coming November.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Jacub Gagnon

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ’5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
My piece, “Elementary, Deer Watson” is not only the title but is the (unspoken) dialogue between the stag to its young buck. A remark from the fatherly stag to the buck explaining the natural order in becoming an adult, which in this case is the rudimentary transformation into more than just a deer, but in fact a hot-air balloon/deer hybrid. Some thoughts that crossed my mind while working on this piece were, father son relations, animal comradery and the unnatural state of nature. Of course this is my thought process and story I’ve attached to the piece and I am always interested and pleasantly intrigued when I hear another give a different interpretation on it.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
At the beginning of 2005 I was still in high school and not really sure what I wanted to do with my life. Shortly after I decided to go to Art College and come that September had started my first year at OCAD in Toronto.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
-Lots of lighting for those late nights
-Lots of artwork hung on the walls
-My computer
-Music, audiobooks, movies and of course my seasons of South Park that have got me through many long nights!
-Although I am currently living without one, I would say a pet is a must!

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
I hope to continue my art career and possibly move to a new city for a change in scenery and atmosphere.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I’ll be in a 2 man show at Thinkspace Gallery with Yosuke Ueno in the spring which I am really excited for. Beyond that doing some group shows and hopefully picking up some more commission work along the way.

Fernando Chamarelli's new piece for Thinkspace's 5 Year Anniversary Show

This November Thinkspace will celebrate our 5 Year Anniversary. To help celebrate we’ve put together a group show we can’t wait for everyone to see this coming November.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Fernando Chamarelli

Tell us a little bit about your piece is Thinkspace’s ’5 Year Anniversary Show ‘this November?
For this show I wanted to do something special, with a new color combination. This painting is a little different from other recent paintings of mine, but I liked the result.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was at university, in the midst of my graphic design class. I didn’t think I would start painting two years later and that the art would be so important in my life.

Name five things you can not live without in your studio?
Music, brushes, music, acrylic paint and music

Where do you hope to be five years from now?
Perhaps in another city, but I do not know, I usually do not have many plans for the future. I just paint and things happen. My art guide my life.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
Some exhibitions here in Brazil and the USA, including my debut LA solo show with Thinkspace in August.

Sarah Joncas 'Foreboding' - Oil on canvas

This November Thinkspace will celebrate our 5 Year Anniversary. To help celebrate we’ve put together a group show we can’t wait for everyone to see this coming November.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Sarah Joncas

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ’5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
Much of the painting was developed on a whim, but as it progressed, a lot of native inspired imagery surfaced. I enjoyed the mixing of something sincerely natural with the plastic, funky appeal of a modern looking girl – even the markings are meant to look like they’ve been made with the lipstick she’s wearing.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was in my last year of high school, preparing to leave for art college to study ‘drawing and painting’ in Toronto.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
My music, the cat, paint supplies, the computer, my pajamas…

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
I just want to be painting and living self sustainable… I’d hate to revert back in any way.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I have a solo show in NYC at the Last Rites Gallery in April owned by Paul Booth. Have already started the work, too. I’m pretty excited! The work is certainly getting darker for this one.

My Barbarian’s ‘The Night Epi$ode’ – in this six-part video installation, the performers explore the economic recession through tropesscience fiction. Inspired by television shows including Rod Serling’s Night Gallery, the narrative involves a romance between a woman and a supernatural being; the former recovers from losing her job while the latter consults witch doctors when his insurance won’t cover his medical condition.Incorporating French existentialism and absurdist dialogue, My Barbarian presents an oft-studied political fault with a novel perspective
