‘Patchwork’ from Moki this December in Thinkspace’s project room

November 30th, 2010 Comments off

We’re excited to welcome Germany based artist Moki to our gallery this December following successful solo shows in the past year and a half in Germany, Czech Republic, and San Francisco.

Moki has lived and worked in Hamburg, Germany since 2001. She is a member of the BeetoBee Collective, a group connecting artists from European and Asian culture. Together with friends she runs an independent artspace named “Hinterconti” in Hamburg. Since 2006 she has drawn comics for the comic anthology “Orang” from the publishing company “Kikipost”, which released her first book called “Asleep In A Foreign Place”. Her second book “How To Disappear” will be published in autumn 2010 by Gingko Press. Moki works primarily as a painter but she also illustrates comics, does animation for film and creates site specific installations.

ROA on the front of New Puppy Gallery / corner of Elm and Cypress

ROA‘s big LA pop-up show has come and gone but his work on the streets of LA are still here for us all to enjoy. Counting the two works here, we’ve now shown you three works on the streets of LA (counting the possum down at 7th and Mateo). In addition to his possum, we now have a bird gracing the LA River and a life cycle of mice gracing the corner of Elm and Cypress.

Look for pics of his largest piece in LA to be released soon from Jet Set Graffiti. A huge pile of animals that’s 40 feet high and over 120 feet long. Just a stunning addition to the LA Free Walls Project.

Those down in Miami this week for Art Basel, look for him on the streets over in the Wynwood district as part of Primary Flight.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Ekundayo

Ekundayo 'Lessons Of Darkness' - Mixed media on paper mounted to wood pane

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Ekundayo

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ’5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
I recently heard a man speaking on the Predilection Towards Conviction, I didn’t understand what the words meant, but to illustrate the point he began to draw comparisons.

The BP oil Disaster could have been prevented with an acoustic trigger,  a cheep device installed during the drilling of the well, that could have shut it down remotely in case of an emergency. The decision to save a small amount of money cost the company billions of dollars and we are still not sure what the fall out will be for the people and Ecosystem. I want my piece to remind myself and others who may enjoy it to stay true to what’s really necessary, and know that our beliefs and convictions effect our lives, the people around us and the world.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was still going to Art Center and showing with Cannibal Flower as well as working on my first two man show “Weightless” with my good friend Isaac Pierro which followed early the next year at Thinkspace. 2005 was my introduction to the L.A art scene when I think back on it now it’s like the memories explode due to all the things I learned that year and the experiences I’ve had creating art in Los Angeles… between the way we all can be persuaded by money, status, convenience or whatever the vice may be and do things that our hearts don’t believe in.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
A kolinsky sable, transparent iron oxide, a metal pen tip and a water bottle with a hole in the cap.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Making even more layered works and preaching the truth to the youth.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I’m blowing up like you thought i would!

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Jen Lobo – Thinkspace 5 Year Anniversary Show (on view through Nov. 27th)

Jen Lobo 'Horsehead Nebula' - Oil on wood panel

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Jen Lobo

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ’5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
My piece is a painting of the ‘Horsehead Nebula’. I keep getting drawn back to the skies lately. I may just eventually make my way through all the animal named nebulae.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I had a baby girl in 2005! What a good year!

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
1. Coffee.
2. Public radio. Music and TV can be a bit distracting when I’m working. I live for new episodes of RadioLab.
3. Books! I have more books than I know what to do with. They are literally stacked on every surface. Everything from children’s books from the ’60s to natural history texts.
4. Naples yellow & gold ochre.
5. My curio trinkets. My husband calls them my jars of weirdness. I keep little glass jars with stuff in them. I’ve got a tuft of a lion’s mane, some wolf fur, a hummingbird nest made with some of my hair (long story), three shark egg sacs, a sparrow skull…. You get the idea. These are the things I would grab in a fire.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
In the same place with the same people.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I’ll be showing in the project room at Thinkspace in June, along with a couple other projects and group shows in the mix.
