Meggs Studio Visit for ‘Paving Paradise’ at Beyond Eden

Meggs Paving Paradise

We stopped by Meggs’s Venice studio to check up on the finishing touches to his solo exhibition ‘Paving Paradise‘ at Beyond Eden opening this weekend. A multi-gallery event celebrating the New Contemporary Art Movement, Beyond Eden in it’s fifth and final edition will be at LAMAG October 3rd and 4th. Saturday’s hours for Beyond Eden will be 6pm-11pm and Sunday noon to 5pm; admission is $5 at the door.

The artwork in this show plays on the same irony and notion of tragedy. Consumerism, materialism, and over-development of the urban landscape are rapidly devastating the same natural resources and beauty we conceive as ‘Paradise’ — a utopian place where its community can live in peace, resources are sustainable, and we can equally appreciate the natural and social environment we live in.

The fifth and final edition of Beyond Eden will once again be hosted by the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Park this coming October. Beyond Eden is a multi-gallery event celebrating the New Contemporary art movement in Los Angeles put together by Andrew Hosner (co-owner / curator at Thinkspace) and made possible by the City Of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. The public is invited to attend this special event and admission will be $5 and open to all.

Each successive Beyond Eden event grows larger and larger with combined average attendance well over 5,000 people for the past four years of the event. The New Contemporary Art Movement continues to build momentum on a national level and is finally starting to receive mainstream recognition from major institutions and publications the world over. With its foundation firmly planted in Southern California and a patron base here in Los Angeles that has been building over the past several decades, it’s easy to see why Beyond Eden has been welcomed with such open arms by the Los Angeles arts community and has become an anticipated annual event. It will be sad to see it go but due to rising costs associated with the City, we can simply no longer afford to put this on and have it live up to the standards of our past events. We plan to make this final event one for the history books and one you won’t soon forget.

Beyond Eden 2015 will showcase the works of five of California’s finest New Contemporary art galleries and will be held during the weekend of October 3rd and 4th with an opening night celebration planned for Saturday, October 3rd from 6-11PM. Participating galleries include C.A.V.E. Gallery (Venice, CA), Copro Gallery (Santa Monica, CA), Spoke Art (San Francisco, CA), Hashimoto Contempoary (San Francisco, CA) and event organizers Thinkspace (Culver City, CA).

In addition to the works on display from the participating galleries, Beyond Eden 2015 will also feature a special solo showcase from Thinkspace represented artist Meggs. ‘Paving Paradise’ will feature an array of new works from the Australian artist along with a large-scale painting / mural for all to enjoy.

Live painting demonstrations on the gallery’s balcony will also be taking place during the opening reception on Saturday night.

About the location:
The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery opened in 1971 and is comprised of a 10,000 square foot Gallery and facility located on the sprawling grounds of Olive Hill in the Barnsdall Art Park. The park overlooks the City of Los Angeles and is also home to the famous, historic Frank Lloyd Wright Hollyhock House and Junior Art Center and Barnsdall Park Theatre. Under the Department of Cultural Affairs, LAMAG is the premier city-run gallery that focuses on contemporary art, particularly the work of living Southern California artists.

MEAR ONE ‘Cognitive Dissonance’ at BEYOND EDEN

Thinkspace and C.A.V.E. Gallery present
MEAR ONE ‘Cognitive Dissonance’

Featured solo showcase as part of BEYOND EDEN 2015 this October

We are honored this year to also be showcasing the powerful new work from Los Angeles’ very own west coast king of graffiti, MEAR ONE. In ‘Cognitive Dissonance’ MEAR ONE explodes back onto the scene with a thought-provoking narrative series of large oils and acrylics, recently described by the SF WEEKLY as the “blood diamonds of pop-surrealism” and by fans as the “Robert Williams of Graffiti.” Don’t miss this special exhibition, on display as part of C.A.V.E. Gallery and Thinkspace’s featured programming for Beyond Eden 2015.

MEGGS: PAVING PARADISE at BEYOND EDEN

Beyond Eden Meggs

Featured solo exhibition as part of this year’s BEYOND EDEN event presented by Thinkspace – MEGGS: PAVING PARADISE

The title of this exhibition is inspired by the iconic lyric, “They paved paradise, to put up a parking lot,” sung by Joni Mitchell in her famous 1970’s song Big Yellow Taxi.

The sentiment of this powerful lyric and the song itself mourns the loss of natural beauty at the hands of industrialization. Mitchell mocks the irony of over-developing a place with natural surrounds, which attracted people in the first place.

‘Paving Paradise’ juxtaposes images of industry and urban decay with the beauty and vibrance of nature, sending a message that we must preserve & appreciate the ‘paradises’ we seek. We need to live with less, be more community-minded, and practice sustainability before it is too late to do so again.

“Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got till its gone.
They paved paradise, to put up a parking lot….”

More details coming soon.
