Art Dorks Statement:

Dorks. Isn’t that derogatory? Not from where I’m standing. A dork, nerd, geek, weirdo, whatever, is someone who doesn’t fit into a cleanly defined mold of what a person should be in our culture. It is someone that is usually looked down on for not living up to a standard of normalcy. I think that suits us just fine. The Art Dorks, originally the brainchild web community of Brendan Danielsson, quickly evolved into a collective of artists. Our work is really not easy to define. The influences range from the 1980’s to the 1880’s and we each bring a different feel to the mix. While we tend to associate with the lowbrow kind of thing, don’t define us by that. We all share a love of drawing and whether we make monsters or meat, robots or rabbits, it is work that revels in and celebrates growing up in a pop-culture, sci-fi, kung-fu cornucopia of a culture. We make what we know, and what we know is that life is not always normal. It doesn’t always wear name brand clothes, drink light beer and watch Monday night football. It’s just life. If I can say one thing about our work, it is that it is a celebration of the things we love as people. What else should you make art about?
- Chris Mostyn / Art Dorks

David Chung, Jeremy Pruitt, Joseph Daniel Fiedler, Robert Hardgrave, Kristian Olson, Justin DeGarmo & Kim Scott

ALSO OPENING on Fri, June 8th in our Project Room:

LETTERS FROM HOME featuring new works and an installation from Lilly Piri

Letters From Home will bring together the first major body of work to show Stateside from Australian artist Lilly Piri. Her works are so soft in scope that they really have to be seen in person to truly appreciate the delicate nature with which she creates her works. In almost every work there is a references to long distance relationships, more often than not through strings of air mail letters connecting her subjects to one another. For this special show she has created a number of small paintings on thin balsa wood that capture these envelops perfectly. Each envelope will hang and connect each of her works and will be exclusive to this site specific installation. With each purchase of an original work, our patrons will also get to choose one of the hand-painted letters as an added bonus, making this a very special exhibition indeed.

Lilly Piri was born on the east coast of Australia in 1985 and has lived there ever since. Currently she is planning to move to Germany to be with her new husband and fellow artist Heiko Windisch.

Piri studied with the Arts Academy in Brisbane. Piri draws & paints with acrylics, oils, watercolor, but her favorite & most employed medium is color pencil. Her work has been published in DPI, Black + White, Empty, Frankie, Hotpress, Marmalade, Voiceworks, Harper's Bazaar, Semi-Permanent books, Curvy books, Faest and Ruby Mag and her list of illustration clients include the Yes Men and Saatchi & Saatchi.

ALSO on view this June in our project room:

BEASTS OF BURDEN featuring new works from Allison Sommers

Allison Sommers is a Virginia-based art director and painter. A graduate of the University of Virginia in 2005, she lives and works in Charlottesville.

With a background in history, a tad of black humor, and a penchant for non sequitur; Allison creates small-scale, theatrical portraits that elude tidy description.

She one day aspires to have a sloth garden and fill her house with poorly-executed taxidermy.
