R. Grimes will also take items back with him to Miami to screen and then mail back to you, so keep that in mind.

Nathan Spoor Bio:

Nathan Spoor paints images of transition and growth, fluid narratives that chronicle a world rich with the mystery, joy, pain, and delicate balance of personal and spiritual evolution. Believing that continuous study of technique and process are critical to his own growth as an artist, Spoor spends an average of 80+ hours each week in his studio. No image or canvas is too precious to wipe, repaint, and even burn on his own journey to discovery and expression. In this way, Spoor makes a personal and transformative connection with each piece that for him lives on beyond the finished works.

Nathan Spoor currently resides in Los Angeles, where he is an active participant in the art community. His work has been shown at several galleries and art events including Earl McGrath Gallery, Track 16, Copro/Nason and Cannibal Flower.

Kevin Peterson Bio:

Born in San Diego in 1980, like all artists, Kevin was influenced by his surroundings. The intricate finishing of Spanish architecture, lush California agriculture, Saturday morning cartoons, eccentric family members, attention to detail, and a healthy cynical attitude has always fueled his work. Early he amused himself by drawing from situations, positive or negative, to either diffuse or examine. Being naturally curious, and having a thirst for the abnormal, he began to read surrealist literature, and visiting museums. Kevin related to the ideas of revolt through art preached by the surrealists, and understood that most art movements were rebellions and reactions to social, political, and religious ideologies. Along with these ideals, he was very much attracted to the ritualistic and therapeutic side creating. After graduating from Laguna College of Art and Design with a BFA in Illustration he began to devote all of his time to oil painting.

When asked to expand further upon what drives him, Kevin replied, "Working in illustration, I realized early that it forces you to become a problem-solver. After countless awkward positions and disappointments, I understood that I really had to relax and go with the flow of things to make them work. I hated using sketches and reference. I felt that they ruined the spontaneity of a painting, and provided a crutch that would be more or less, detrimental to my process of free association. I guess I kind of felt that it took away from the mystery and importance of my memories and the basic function of painting from my head. I feel that it is very important to exercise the basic function of memory and keep it sharp. The more and more I paint, the more my focus lies in the process itself, and the ripening of an idea through happy accidents and subconscious urges. I never know what a piece will look like until it’s completed, which is the most exciting part of painting to me. More importantly, I believe that my job as an artist nowadays is to act like an antenna that receives and negates information, and basically providing commentary for my surroundings in my own unique voice."

Francesco LoCastro Bio

Francesco LoCastro was born on July 2nd, 1976 in Catania, Italy. He was raised in Germany and has been living in Florida ("The Mecca of Denial") since 1993. At 30, he is the youngest member of a loose grouping of Florida artists that includes Sas and Colin Christian and R.Grimes of FACTION, who work in the style known as lowbrow/pop surrealism.

LoCastro is probably the most political, taking on everything from the Catholic priest sex-abuse scandal to President George W. Bush in provocative imagery.

LoCastro is an amalgamation of a European sensibility and an American openness - no subject is unfit for depiction on his canvases. He brings Chuck Jones farce, tiki-lounge culture, and Hieronymus Bosch visions to a retro-futurist world: In the not-so-distant future, planet Earth turns into a huge global village in which humans, androids, and mutants hesitantly cohabitate as a fanatical, self-centered, materialistic society.

Simultaneous to pursuing his painting career, he has been actively involved in manifesting South Florida as a vital center for the lowbrow movement by founding several independent curatorial projects, such as the “Parallel Universe,” “Culture Shock,” “Monsters of Lowbrow” and “We’ll Make A Lover Of You” exhibitions.

LoCastro will be featured as one of the distinguished artists who have played a role in forging the New Miami Art Movement in the upcoming book “Miami Contemporary Artists,” to be released in Spring 2007 by Schiffer Publishing.

The "Public:" collection from Erik Abel

Erik Abel Bio

After several years spent absorbing life in the Northwest while he lived in and around Portland, Oregon, Erik Abel decided in 2005 to return to Southern California to take part in the area’s swelling art scene.

Being heavily influenced by and involved in the surf/skate/snow industry, and working as a freelance graphic designer for over 10 years, Abel‘s method of bold, graphical imagery fused with his loose brush and pen work seems to find a corner of its own in the art world.

When asked what keeps him going, he answered honestly, "The evolution of my art is what really has me intrigued. Every piece builds on the knowledge gained from creating the last; and the fact that I will paint for the rest of my life and still never reach 'an end' is as fulfilling as it is frustrating. It’s got me hooked; I never know what’s gonna come out of my head next."

Abel is infatuated with creating an aesthetically pleasing experience through his artistic process. "That's why I paint, so I can search for a balance, evoke a mood, remember things, and spawn new thoughts. For me, painting is self-therapy; if it happens to help other people in some way as well, that's even better."

Elements from inspirations such as ancient civilizations, cycles of nature, plants, symbols, icons, and politics systematically weave their way throughout Abel’s work. Unique imagery combined with a natural eye for visual harmony gifts Abel's work with an easily recognizable and fresh style.
