This November Thinkspace will celebrate our 5 Year Anniversary. To help celebrate we’ve put together a group show we can’t wait for everyone to see this coming November.
‘5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Emma Tooth
Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
I have sent 2 paintings of my father, entitled “Howie’s Hands”. I had been meaning to paint his portrait for many years, inspired by the character in his talented woodworking hands and my childhood memories of “helping” him saw wood on old trestles by sitting on them to stop them wobbling. The saw he holds was given to him by his late father, and was thought to have been lost in a fire at his workshop which took thousands of pounds worth of equipment he had collected over a lifetime. The saw was only saved from immolation by the fact that I had borrowed it and forgotten for some time to return it. He was amazed and delighted when he found it at my house, miraculously unharmed. My sister says of the portrait, ‘It’s quite moving; its exactly him, all weathered from his years of working his fingers to the bone to give us a good life.’
What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was getting married in a 900 year old castle. My husband, I and the 100 guests all wore black; it was beautiful!
Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Brioche, Mana, Lady Cora and Lady Clarice (my hens) and Owen (my husband).
Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Big in Japan!
What have you got coming up in 2011?
Same as usual – lot more paintings! And my book, From Pig farmers and Showgirls, will be out.
