“If you’re looking for one art show to attend this year, I’d like to suggest Thinkspace’s upcoming 5 Year Anniversary blow out. Established in 2005, Thinkspace is one of the few galleries who doesn’t just follow trends, they start them.” – MyModernMet.com
’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Derek Gores
Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
A collage portrait of Chicago’s famed muse Veronika, black and white, a shot of red… titled ‘Miss V’… I met Veronika earlier this year for a fun show and she graciously allowed me to make this portrait. It’s the first where I’ve leaned so hard to the light side in my collages, but she still has her dark mystery. Particularly enjoyed playing with optical patterns in creating the grays. One of my favorites.
What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was art directing for a super-gigantic sports apparel company, daydreaming arty stuff and having tag-team-doodle wars at break time. Most of my creativity back then was in the form of showing my daughters what they could do with a leather sphere on a grassy field. The view inside my head was percolating though… prepping to get personal in my art again circa 2007.
Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Music, bedazzlement, magazines, lots of varnish, and wet charcoal whispering my name.
Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Chasing the art new places. Bigger? 3Der? Minimalist? Looking further outside the traditional art circles, collaborating. One long date with art and Art. Maybe have my kids involved in some gigantic Rube Goldberg Zen Art Randomizer Machine. In a theatre. In New York. With a team of shoe designers.
What have you got coming up in 2011?
3 person show at Thinkspace in March along with Craig ‘Skibs’ Barker and Liz Brizzi, a 2 person show at Elliott Fouts in Sacramento in November, some new fun brewing with SLOW Gallery in Florida and Parlor Gallery in New Jersey. That’s what’s up so far.
