’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Ekundayo
Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
I recently heard a man speaking on the Predilection Towards Conviction, I didn’t understand what the words meant, but to illustrate the point he began to draw comparisons… The BP oil disaster could have been prevented with an acoustic trigger A cheep device installed during the drilling of the well, that could have shut it down remotely in case of an emergency. The decision to save a small amount of money cost the company billions of dollars and we are still not sure what the fall out will be for the people and Ecosystem. I want my piece to remind myself and others who may enjoy it to stay true to whats really necessary, and know that our beliefs and convictions effect our lives, the people around us, and the world.
What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was still going to Art Center and showing with Cannibal Flower as well as working on my first two man show ‘Weightless’ with my good friend Isaac Pierro which followed early the next year at the 1st Thinkspace location off Melrose. 2005 was my introduction to the LA art scene… when I think back on it now it’s like the memories explode due to all the things I learned that year and the experiences I’ve had creating art in Los Angeles… between the way we all can be persuaded by money, status, convenience or whatever the vice may be to do the things that our hearts don’t believe in.
Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
A kolinsky sable, transparent iron oxide, a metal pen tip and a water bottle with a hole in the cap!
Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Making even more layered works and preaching the truth to the youth.
What have you got coming up in 2011?
I’m blowing up like you thought I would!
