GAIA 'Subversion of Korean Post Colonial Identity' - Acrylic on paper mounted to hand-cut wood panel

“If you’re looking for one art show to attend this year, I’d like to suggest Thinkspace’s upcoming 5 Year Anniversary blow out. Established in 2005, Thinkspace is one of the few galleries who doesn’t just follow trends, they start them.” MyModernMet.com

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Gaia

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
The hybrid of the Tiger and Rabbit signifies the annual transition in the Korean calendar. Furthermore, these archetypal symbols of aggression and submission address the hierarchy of japanese colonization and contemporary korean identity. Situated in Hongdae, the center of Seoul’s fashion and nightlife, the neighborhood is the confluence of traditional korean culture and American influence.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was fifteen. I was a wigger doing my PSAT’s.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Gin, Anoushe, foosball table, projector, tape.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Doing museum shows would be incredible…

What have you got coming up in 2011?
A couple things in the mix with the Irvine Contemporary, Nelly Duff, residency in Korea, traveling throughout the UK, and a gig with Gallery Heist.
