’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Brett Amory

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
I will be putting “Waiting#63” in the anniversary show. This painting is part of my “Waiting Night” series. I took the pic for the reference when I was down in LA for my solo at Thinkspace last June. I was in Fulerton with Julianne Yates from Gallery Heist and we stopped at this old retro diner to get some food. The place made me feel like I was in another time. It had this melancholy feeling like it didn’t belong in the world as we know it. It was perfect for the “Waiting” series. I had Julianne pose in front for awhile till she was able to express the emotion of the place.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I had just graduated from art school and was starting to show in galleries.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Brushes Paint Terpentine Computer Music

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
As an artist I just want to go bigger. Bigger ideas, bigger work, bigger spaces. In 5 years I really hope I have the the means of doing my work on a very large scale. I want to awaken the viewer to a new state of consciousness and bring them to the now while looking at my work. To do this I feel the work has to be larger than life. Paintings with ten foot figures and larger than life environments. I hope to have the means to do this work and big enough spaces to show it in.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I will be in a three person show at Thinkspace in January and a three person show at Bold Hype in January. That’s it so far.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with KuKula

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ’5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
I feel like maybe in some place this is a self portrait. I was trying to find a pose that make it unclear if she’s flying in the sky or is she actually falling. She have a funky umbrella because she’s waiting for the rain, all in her nicest silk shoes which surly will go bad if they’ll get wet, just anther wrong shoes calculation…and of course like in every classic nightmare dream, she doesn’t wear a top on.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
5 years ago I was only living in the States for less then a year. Was ironing drawings on T-shirts and selling them in boutiques. I’m not sure if I even made any paintings then… maybe I hade my first show in a store in Berkeley then.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
I couldn’t live with out my collections: books and magazines, antique dolls, shoes and vintage cloth, movies, and my husband.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
All I can think about when I look at the future is that I won’t be sick and I’ll have all my limbs attached… that will be great!

What have you got coming up in 2011?
For 2011 I’ll have only one solo show. I’m also working with an Israeli fashion company on a little collection together and I hope to work on my French.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Lindsey Carr

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
The piece is named Dukkha and is inspired by 19th Century Chinese bird and flower paintings which were made for export to England. I love their strange mix of oriental and western sensibilities. The flowers are Magnolias with a central Lotus flower and among its leaves are European Bee Eaters doing some of the basic activities necessary for survival. The term Dukkha is sanskrit and usually translates as ‘suffering’ but some say it is better translated as ‘Unease’ – it’s a commonly used term in Buddhist philosophy.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I moved from London to Scotland and started painting again after many, many years!

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Aside from obvious things like paints and paper:
Kitchen roll. Clean water. A mirror. Good reference materials. An audio book.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Alive and well and painting all the time.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
My first solo show! Which is in the UK in February at Imagine Gallery and then I’ll be in your project room in September! Which i’m thoroughly excited about.

‘5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Craig “Skibs” Barker – Thinkspace 5 Year Anniversary Show (Sat, Nov. 6th)

Craig "Skibs" Barker - 'I Can Not Change The Future But I'll Find You If You're Gone' - Oil and mixed media

This November Thinkspace will celebrate our 5 Year Anniversary. To help celebrate we’ve put together a group show we can’t wait for everyone to see this coming November.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Craig “Skibs” Barker

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
My piece is an expansion of my previous work exploring interpersonal relationships, and non-verbal communication. With inspiration taken from pop culture, literature, music and printed material I combine figurative, abstract, and mixed media styles to explore these relationships and unspoken conversations.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
In 2005 I was finishing my painting degree from CSUF and was just beginning to show my mixed media paintings. Also, with some help from Jason Maloney, began showing my work at the Cannibal Flower shows in LA.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
1. Paint 2. Brushes 3. Respirator 4. Music 5. Comfortable chair

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Happy and healthy with painting as my only job, and making a living at it!!!

What have you got coming up in 2011?
My main focus for 2011 is a 3 person show I will be in at Thinkspace Gallery in March with Derek Gores, Liz Brizzi and myself.
