Dabs Myla 'Luck In Odd Numbers' - Acrylic on wood panel

“If you’re looking for one art show to attend this year, I’d like to suggest Thinkspace’s upcoming 5 Year Anniversary blow out. Established in 2005, Thinkspace is one of the few galleries who doesn’t just follow trends, they start them.”MyModernMet.com

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Dabs Myla

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
Well, five years ago the Dabs Myla team started…and just last month we made it absolutely official! Dabs and Myla are married! Our piece for the show is about us!!

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
We were both finishing up studying illustration in Melbourne, Australia, that’s where we met each other! And exactly 5 years ago was when we realized we were in love with each other!!!

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Our iPods, yummy tasty snacks, each other, nice brushes and the dumbest jokes only the two of us ever get to hear!!!

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Doing exactly what we do now, but just on a bigger scale!

What have you got coming up in 2011?
We are having a show alongside Shag at M Modern gallery, as a part of Modernism week in Palm Springs in February. Also, we will be showing in the front room of Thinkspace next August…we really have our work cut out for us!!!!

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Kelly Vivanco

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
“Blanket Fort” is part of a series that I touch on from time to time depicting ‘my girls’ in fantastical outdoor settings. It has the elements of mystery and wonder I love to work with rendered out in saturated tones. The theme partially stems from some nostalgic feelings of building ephemeral blanket forts and being ‘protected’ from things, real or imagined.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was ratcheting up my artistic works in a new studio after being creatively dormant for too many years. I was also going through some important and difficult personal transitions. It was a pretty intense time!

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Ample paints and supplies, tons of music, inspiring books and clippings, dark chocolate and no interruptions.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Still going strong, as happy and healthy as ever and painting what ever I fancy. I would like to get back into oils, make more construction anchored pieces with my husband, Peter. I would also love to make more sculptures and larger works as well. I am excited to see the organic progression of what I am working on now.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I have tons of new work in store for my “Springs To Mind” show with you guys in February! I will also have a few pieces in L.A. and London group shows through the year, another wine label released at Wiens and a solo in the Fall at Flatcolor in Seattle. It will be a busy year!

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Aaron Nagel

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
My piece is called “Spotless” and is oil on panel. It’s not really about anything, but is meant to convey a mood. For me, that mood is similar to what I feel like viewing certain iconography… foreboding yet inspiring.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was working a torturous office job, playing and touring on/off with a band, and painting…but painting in a totally different style than I do now. I had no idea how to paint flesh tones five years ago.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
My computer (for playing audiobooks — really), naples yellow Italian, coffee, my cat Ty, and paper towels.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
I hope to be painting in a bigger studio, and showing in more cities/countries. I’m happy where I am, so if I can keep this trajectory going, I should be ok.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I have another solo show at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco in May ’11. Then a 2-person show in September ’11 at Thinkspace… and probably some group stuff in between all that.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Camilla d’Errico

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was studying Illustration and Graphic Design at Capilano College in Vancouver, BC. Living for the first time away from my family and friends hatching a new path for myself. I started showing in galleries and found my passion in art.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Music. My Mac. Anime figures. Grapes. Art books and manga.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Hopefully my series Helmetgirls will be in full swing and I’ll be drawing that feverishly, along with Tanpopo and a whole world of figures and possibly producing my first anime. In five years from now I also hope to be living 4 months of the year in South East Asia in a remote little village, painting the days away, creating paintings that really re-inspire me!

What have you got coming up in 2011?
The release of my art book published by Dark Horse Deluxe and a toy line. I’ll be illustrating a fantasy graphic novel with a French publisher and a comic book for Spanish singer Monica Naranjo. As for paintings I’ll be doing a few very select group shows and working on a new body of paintings for Opera Gallery in New York.

‘5 Years / 5 Questions’ with David MacDowell – Thinkspace 5 Year Anniversary Show (Sat, Nov. 6th)

David MacDowell 'American Cracker' - Acrylic on canvas

“If you’re looking for one art show to attend this year, I’d like to suggest Thinkspace’s upcoming 5 Year Anniversary blow out. Established in 2005, Thinkspace is one of the few galleries who doesn’t just follow trends, they start them.” MyModernMet.com

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with David MacDowell

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
For the past month, I thought it would be cool to paint a picture of Richard Pryor getting hit in the head by a box of crackers. The image is indicative of his humor and attitude, and it definitely makes a broad statement on issues that we like to pretend aren’t there. I think the 70’s were revolutionary with the fact that we could laugh and talk about racial unity and differences. Now everything is so politically correct, I just feel like it’s all going backwards again.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
My whole past is full of nothing but bad memories, I really hate to dredge things up! I wasn’t an artist 5 years ago, and that alone smacks of a misdirected youth.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Paints, Canvas, Music, Coffee and Smokes.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
My goal is to stay alive and out of jail. If I can do those two simple things, everyday will be like Christmas.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
It’s been group show madness the past 2 years, so I’m weaning them out for solo shows to explode mind, body and soul in 2011. Get down, make love, let’s get funky.
