‘5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Aaron Nagel – Thinkspace’s 5 Year Anniversary Show (Sat, Nov. 6th)

Aaron Nagel 'Spotless' - Oil on maple panel

“If you’re looking for one art show to attend this year, I’d like to suggest Thinkspace’s upcoming 5 Year Anniversary blow out. Established in 2005, Thinkspace is one of the few galleries who doesn’t just follow trends, they start them.” MyModernMet.com

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Aaron Nagel

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
My piece is called “Spotless” and is oil on panel. It’s not really about anything, but is meant to convey a mood. For me, that mood is similar to what I feel like viewing certain iconography… foreboding yet inspiring.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was working a torturous office job, playing and touring on/off with a band, and painting…but painting in a totally different style than I do now. I had no idea how to paint flesh tones five years ago.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
My computer (for playing audiobooks — really), naples yellow Italian, coffee, my cat Ty, and paper towels.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
I hope to be painting in a bigger studio, and showing in more cities/countries. I’m happy where I am, so if I can keep this trajectory going, I should be ok.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I have another solo show at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco in May ’11. Then a 2-person show in September ’11 at Thinkspace… and probably some group stuff in between all that.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Camilla d’Errico

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I was studying Illustration and Graphic Design at Capilano College in Vancouver, BC. Living for the first time away from my family and friends hatching a new path for myself. I started showing in galleries and found my passion in art.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Music. My Mac. Anime figures. Grapes. Art books and manga.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Hopefully my series Helmetgirls will be in full swing and I’ll be drawing that feverishly, along with Tanpopo and a whole world of figures and possibly producing my first anime. In five years from now I also hope to be living 4 months of the year in South East Asia in a remote little village, painting the days away, creating paintings that really re-inspire me!

What have you got coming up in 2011?
The release of my art book published by Dark Horse Deluxe and a toy line. I’ll be illustrating a fantasy graphic novel with a French publisher and a comic book for Spanish singer Monica Naranjo. As for paintings I’ll be doing a few very select group shows and working on a new body of paintings for Opera Gallery in New York.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with David MacDowell

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
For the past month, I thought it would be cool to paint a picture of Richard Pryor getting hit in the head by a box of crackers. The image is indicative of his humor and attitude, and it definitely makes a broad statement on issues that we like to pretend aren’t there. I think the 70’s were revolutionary with the fact that we could laugh and talk about racial unity and differences. Now everything is so politically correct, I just feel like it’s all going backwards again.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
My whole past is full of nothing but bad memories, I really hate to dredge things up! I wasn’t an artist 5 years ago, and that alone smacks of a misdirected youth.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Paints, Canvas, Music, Coffee and Smokes.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
My goal is to stay alive and out of jail. If I can do those two simple things, everyday will be like Christmas.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
It’s been group show madness the past 2 years, so I’m weaning them out for solo shows to explode mind, body and soul in 2011. Get down, make love, let’s get funky.

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Ana Bagayan

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
I’m doing a series of drawings and paintings for my next show which feature portraits with insects crawling on the face and hair. It’s always been a fear of mine to have insects crawling on me and I like the idea that something so small and simple can give you the willies.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
Graduating from college.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Music, my laptop, my boyfriend Ara and our dog Sushi, and coffee (I don’t like sleeping.)

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Still alive, hopefully.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I have a solo drawing show at FB69 Gallery in Munster, Germany and various group shows (plus a solo with Thinkspace in early 2012).

’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Joshua Petker

Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
My painting continues with the theme I’ve focused on all year: the balance between identity and reality. I incorporated elements from the two shows I had this year. I am really happy with the painting.

What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
In 2005 I was just barely getting my feet wet as an artist. It’s been five years and I’ve done a lot but I still feel like I am just getting barely my feet wet.

Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
Paint, brushes, books, tea, and smoke.

Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
I hope to be making a much wider variation of art than I am known for now.

What have you got coming up in 2011?
I’m doing a mini show of 5 large works at the Corey Helford Gallery next summer. Other than that I am taking the year off to paint for shows in 2012.
