After taking over Los Angeles last month, ROA headed down to Miami, FL last week during Art Basel to take part in the annual ‘Primary Flight’ mural showcase that takes place in the Wynwood Arts District. His stunning contribution is shown above… just massive!!!

Look for pics of his largest piece in LA to be released soon from Jet Set Graffiti. A huge pile of animals that’s 40 feet high and over 120 feet long. Just a stunning addition to the LA Free Walls Project!

ROA‘s big LA pop-up show has come and gone but his work on the streets of LA are still here for us all to enjoy. Counting the two works here, we’ve now shown you three works on the streets of LA (counting the possum down at 7th and Mateo). In addition to his possum, we now have a bird gracing the LA River and a life cycle of mice gracing the corner of Elm and Cypress.

Timothy Karpinski 'Me and You' - acrylic and graphite on hand-cut paper
’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Timothy Karpinski
Tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
The piece is called “Me and You” and it’s been a work in progress for the last month as I’ve been working on many other paintings at the same time. I’ve been taking a more intuitive approach to the piece randomly adding to it with only a loose concept which has been bringing new life into the feel of the piece, it’s also one of the bigger pieces I’ve made lately with alot going on. The painting also is a first for me to combine both a night and day scene into one piece which i want to explore more in the future as well as playing with silhouetting.
What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
I think I had just moved to Portland from the east coast, fresh out of art school from Vermont. I had moved to Portland to pursue my design career, I had always painted and done a few shows here and there, but mostly painted in my bedroom to unwind from all day design work. Now I’m painting almost full time and running my own art gallery, it’s been an amazing five years and so happy to have been embraced and motivated by everyone at Thinkspace, they truly light a well needed fire in me creatively and helped push me into the direction I’m headed today.
Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
1: paper towels
2: mechanical pencil
3: headphones
4: blow dryer
5: studio mates to shoot the shit with and get inspired by
Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
Making art full time, building my dreamhouse / studio near a river or lake, sailing on the ocean, playing the piano well, in love.
What have you got coming up in 2011?
Very excited to hunker down this winter and prepare for my show this spring at Thinkspace. Going to Mexico to surf with my sweetheart. Playing the piano and making some videos. Running the day to day at Together Gallery. Painting and loving everyday.
Look for a special show curated by Thinkspace in Portland at Together Gallery in March and Karpinski’s return to Thinkspace in April 2011… more details announced soon on both exhibits.

Nathan DeYoung 'Scene 1: As The Landscape Blurred (The Memories Shown Through It)' - Acrylic on MDF panel
’5 Years / 5 Questions’ with Nathan DeYoung
Please tell us a little bit about your piece for Thinkspace’s ‘5 Year Anniversary Show’ this November?
My piece is an acrylic painting on MDF panel. Conceptually it’s about trying to hold on to something you’ve had, and the effects that has on your ability to pursue a desired future. I write a poem for each piece and the poem for this painting is below.
Scene 1: As The Landscape Blurred (The Memories Shown Through It)
Blue and green share in yellow gold and aged brown,
mixing the wisdom and smiles
of all that lies below and across from you.
Held deep in the familiar lines of your hands
is the scene we smother,
fractions of warm air, forgotten folds and imagined creases.
All shimmering and brilliant we stand,
where the smiles grow in the deep and foreign roots
of those circular feet, that blur everything. and remember nothing.
What were you doing back in 2005 when Thinkspace started?
In 2005 I was a senior in high school that was looking forward to graduating. After school I was working a couple of part time jobs and painting whenever I could.
Name 5 things you can’t live without in your studio?
1. TONS of drinking water.
2. My iPod
3. Heatgun (used to dry paint)
4. My two overhead lights (can’t work with just one, need both of em’)
5. My collection of assorted beanies and headbands to keep my hair out of my face while painting
Where do you hope to be 5 years from now?
I hope to be working as an artist full time. I hope I’m still living in San Diego county because I love it here. I hope I’m wiser and better spoken. I hope I’m still pursuing growth and challenging myself, and I hope that I am still very, very grateful, and appreciative of the life I have.
What have you got coming up in 2011?
I’m hiding for most of next year so I can build work for my two person show with Thinkspace Gallery late in 2011 alongside Linnea Strid!
Look for two amazing new works from DeYoung as part of this December’s ‘The New Realism’ show opening on Sat, Dec. 11th. Look for a sneak peek at his works for the show coming together via the link below: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thinkspace/sets/72157625394622610/
