BEYOND EDEN 2011 recap

Thank you to all that showed support and came through this year!

The third annual Beyond Eden held at the historic Barnsdall Art Park / Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in East Hollywood during the weekend of October 1-2. 2011 was vibrant and well-attended with an estimated 5,000 people passing through the gallery between Saturday night and Sunday day – a fantastic turnout especially in the face of numerous competing art events, art fairs and the citywide Getty sponsored “Pacific Standard Time.” The ongoing success of Beyond Eden is further proof that the New Contemporary Art Scene (an umbrella term which encompasses Pop Surrealism, Street Art, Lowbrow, Outsider, Illustrative and Narrative) is a force to be reckoned in the art world now, and for a long time to come.

Taking in the works at Thinkspace's portion of the fair

The event, with its foundation planted firmly in California, the birthplace of the New Contemporary Art Scene, showcased the works of a half dozen Southern California galleries including C.A.V.E. Gallery, Copro Gallery, Gallery Nucleus, La Luz De Jesus Gallery (in celebration of their 25th Anniversary this year), Toy Art Gallery, and Thinkspace. Live painting demonstrations took place at the entrance and bar area of the gallery. This year’s Beyond Eden featured events included exhibitions of emerging LA based artists from Cannibal Flower, the the LA stop of the traveling Quentin vs. Coen exhibit from San Francisco’s Spoke Art and Creator / Spectator, a special showcase of Los Angeles street artists presented by Thinkspace and curated by local artist Euth. A screening of the ‘best of’ Sketch Theater, the online site designed to inspire creativity through time-lapsed, start-to-finish sketches from numerous artists ran continually in the gallery’s screening room. The event was topped off with a lively and packed award ceremony, celebrating artist Anthony Ausgang on the 20th anniversary of his first solo show and his continued presence and successes in the art world. Previous Beyond Eden award ceremonies recognized the contributions and influences with lifetime achievement awards given to La Luz de Jesus’ Billy Shire in 2009 and artist Robert Williams in 2010

Beyond Eden would like to thank the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery and Barnsdall Art Park, all the artists, attendees, galleries, curators, partners, writers, photographers, bar coordinator and bartenders for helping to make Beyond Eden not only happen, but happen in a big way!

Beyond Eden is coordinated by Andrew Hosner of Thinkspace Gallery and the Sour Harvest blog with Lee Joseph of LJP for the Visual Arts and Dionysus Records.

Craig “Skibs” Barker for BEYOND EDEN 2011

We invited Craig “Skibs” Barker to do a big install in our area of this year’s BEYOND EDEN fair and he has delivered in absolutely flying colors with curators at LAMAG already taking notice. The work of Stephanie Ann Buer which we'll be debuting in LA at BEYOND EDEN

BEYOND EDEN 2011 is quickly approaching – less than 3 weeks to go now. We’ve more advertising and marketing in place than ever before, so we’re really looking forward to one hell of a show. Not to mention all the folks that will be in town for the big Pacific Standard Time event and the numerous new fairs invading LA this Sept/Oct.

Currently getting our artists geared up for the show and the new works coming in so far are just magical. I know all the other galleries are putting together some awesome exhibits as well and will do me proud. It’s an honor to put this event together for the people of LA and to also help bring attention to the amazing grounds of the Barnsdall Art Park and the LA Municipal Art Gallery where the event is held.

Euth on the streets of Los Angeles

If that wasn’t enough we’ve also teamed up with local artist Euth to shine a light on some of the most intriguing artists currently gracing the streets of Los Angeles with their work.

“Creator / Spectator”
Presented by Thinkspsace and curated by Euth

The artists chosen to participate in “Creator / Spectator” represent the outside circle of underground art in Los Angeles. These are individuals exploring concepts deeply rooted in their own personal history and that are not looking to follow in the footsteps of those who came before them. Each artist was selected because their work is not simply about a name and a product, but more so about who he or she is as a individual – this is not a group working towards a common title or theme like “street art” but instead a group of individuals who have found common ground in a medium that promotes the individuality of each component explored.

This exhibit looks to explore beyond the mentality that the medium is the message. This is about a path of life chosen by these artists that constitutes the very nature of who they are. Each artist involved in this show offers something unique to the city of Los Angeles, a personal message to which they are both creator and spectator.

Featuring works from:
Cat Cult
Corrina Corina
CRYPTIK
Duart JDI
Euth
Line Line Dot
NOMADE
Smog City
