DAVID COOLEY SOLO EXHIBITION AT MONIKER INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR

Thinkspace Gallery is taking over the eighth edition of the Moniker Art Fair this coming October with 8 stands including seven mini solo-exhibitions and one group exhibition. We’re honored to be hosting the debut U.K solo shows for some of the biggest names in the New Contemporary/ Urban Contemporary movements. At least 8 new works will be on view from each featured artists in addition to a new print edition for their London fans. Each artist’s print to be released in tandem with the fair.

David Cooley will be at Stand 27, and our group exhibition at Stand 34 where we will have our free Thinkspace logo parody buttons (in the vein of the classic logos of Slayer and Motorhead). We are really looking forward to meeting as many of our U.K. based patrons as possible during the fair.

Please note, we will be offering the works for sale first to those attending the VIP and Public openings of the Moniker Art Fair. We are committed to helping to build each artist’s patron base in the U.K.  A digital preview for each solo exhibition and our group exhibition will be shared the morning of Friday, October 6th. We will then get back to all interested parties during the day of Saturday, October 7th to discuss purchases. Please do not call the gallery regarding Moniker Art Fair purchases on October 7th.

We can’t wait to debut all these incredible new works in just a few weeks.

DAVID COOLEY INTERVIEW ON PROHBTD

Thinkspace Family member and Moniker International Art Fair featured artist David Cooley was recently interviewed by arts and culture website PROHBTD. The interview dives into Cooley’s creative processes intersection with meditation and self-discovery.  Visit the PROHBTD website for the full interview.

Has anyone come to a show and talked to you about your art while clearly tripping on shrooms or acid?

I’ve shown work at a couple music festivals years ago, so I’m sure it’s happened, but honestly I can’t really think of a time when that’s happened at a show. One time I was in a bar, and this guy was clearly tripping pretty hard on acid. While we were talking, the topic of art came up so I showed some photos of my work on my phone. He was genuinely super excited about my work, and he just kept hugging and thanking me. It actually felt pretty good to share my work with someone in that state and have them react like that.

Make sure to keep your eye out for Cooley’s latest body of work showing at Moniker International Art Fair, October 5th – 8th in London. To view all available work from David Cooley please visit the Thinkspace Gallery’s website.

An interview with David Cooley

An interview with David Cooley

Can you share a bit about your new body of work for ‘Dashing In Headlong‘? What do these new works represent for you?

Sure, Dashing in Headlong represents facing ones fears and not hesitating or over thinking about what it is you have to do.

How did you come to your unique style? Care to talk a bit about the process itself, from sourcing the fabrics to the application of your signature paint spikes?

I first started doing the spikes by experimenting and playing with paint about 5 years ago and it’s slowly expanded it into what I’m doing today, now I’m using basic geometry to achieve curves and depth while interacting with various rendered images. I started painting on fabric around the same time, my girlfriend at the time was designing and sewing purses in our apartment and she had fabric thrown all through out the house, so I would to pin them up on the walls to get them off the floor, that’s when I got inspired by the patterns and images of the fabric to paint on them. I get most of the fabric from Ebay, friends and a fabric shop here in Santa Barbara.

What fuels you to keep creating?

It’s fun, the possibility of where it might take me and to contribute something beautiful, thought provoking and sometimes funny to the world.

Please describe your dream project if time and money were not issues.

I’d have to say a large scale interactive sculpture, like a playground or something.

Favorite item in your studio?

My espresso machine.

What’s with all the pools featured in your works?

The pools are about over coming fears and anxiety. There’s something very exhilarating and calming about diving into the unknown and learning that there wasn’t anything to worry about in the first place.

Is there anyone in particular, artist or otherwise, that you’d like to mention here?

Yeah, Russ Carter a local Santa Barbara artist who’s mentored me though out the years, he’s taught me everything from how to build a house to rendering techniques and LC for all his guidance.

‘Dashing In Headlong’ from David Cooley is on view through this Sat, June 30th at Thinkspace
